The Yogi government is set to establish 2,250 domestic biogas plants to promote renewable energy and sustainable agriculture in Uttar Pradesh. As part of this initiative, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, has tasked the state’s Environment Directorate with achieving this target for the 2024-25 financial year.
On Friday, the Sistema.Bio Institute received official approval from the Environment Directorate to oversee the implementation of these biogas plants. The initiative will focus on rural areas of four key districts: Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, and Gonda.
The biogas plants will serve a dual purpose. In addition to providing clean biogas for cooking, the plants will also produce organic manure to enhance agricultural productivity.
While granting approval to Sistema. Bio, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department, Dr. Arun Kumar Saxena said that the total cost of each biogas plant under the scheme is Rs 39300. In this, the beneficiary farmers will have to contribute only Rs 3990.
The remaining cost will be covered through central financial assistance and carbon credits. A key feature of this initiative is that Sistema.Bio, the implementing agency, will generate ₹20,960 per plant by selling carbon credits. This innovative carbon financing model helps reduce the financial burden on farmers while benefiting the environment.
Sistema.Bio will also provide 10 years of service support to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of the plants. Special priority will be given to women, as well as small and marginal farmers, providing them with affordable, clean fuel. The project aims to reduce carbon emissions in the state, promote the use of organic fertilizers, and create additional income opportunities for families through sustainable practices.
Additional Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh and Environment Director Ashish Tiwari were also present during the event.
