20 August, New Delhi: Indian Railways has once again demonstrated its prompt grievance-redressal mechanism by taking swift action on a passenger complaint as he tagged the Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, regarding the onboard catering services.

A passenger travelling on Train No. 22435 Banaras-New Delhi Vande Bharat Express raised a complaint on social media on 16 August 2026, tagging Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw over the quality of food served onboard.

The complaint pertained to a paratha that was reported to be of poor quality and undercooked. Soon after the matter came to notice, the onboard catering staff contacted the passenger, heard the grievance and offered to replace the meal.

₹2 Lakh Penalty Imposed on Catering License

The matter was not confined to immediate onboard redressal. IRCTC imposed a penalty of ₹2 lakh on the concerned catering licensee. In addition, a ₹20,000 penalty was imposed on the agency responsible for food safety at the base kitchen for negligence.

Steps were also taken to strengthen monitoring of food preparation and packaging processes at the base kitchen.

The action reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to responsive passenger service and firm accountability. Whenever deficiencies in service quality are brought to notice, responsibility is fixed and corrective measures are initiated without delay.

Following the resolution of the complaint, the passenger expressed satisfaction with the action taken.
