100-metre elevation benchmark will leave 90 per cent range vulnerable: Chib

NEW DELHI, December 26:

The Indian Youth Congress will launch the Aravalli Satyagraha Yatra from January 7, which will continue till January 20. The IYC has already launched an online campaign for the protection of the Aravallis, which has engaged over one lakh people so far.

Addressing a press conference here today, Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib alleged that there appeared to be a well-thought-out plan to grant mining rights for “rare earths” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s well-known friend, who has already been allotted thousands of acres of land in various parts of the country, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the Andamans.

The Youth Congress demanded that the government seek a review of the “100-metre elevation benchmark” for the Aravalli hills. He said this would mean that nearly 90 per cent of the range would not be protected, allowing mining in a vast area.

Chib warned that such a move would lead to an environmental disaster as large-scale mining in the Aravallis would deplete the water table, increase temperatures and accelerate desertification, potentially engulfing parts of Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

He strongly opposed the environment ministry’s recommendation that Aravalli hills with an elevation of less than 100 metres not be counted as hills, pointing out that nearly 90 per cent of the range comprises hills of this height or lower.

IYC leader demanded that the central government file a review petition in the Supreme Court to get the order amended. He said the entire Aravalli range must be declared an environmentally protected zone and that mining should not be allowed anywhere in the region.
